There are fishing tournaments—and then there is the Costa Offshore World

Championship, where elite anglers from around the globe gather off the Pacific coast of

Costa Rica for three extraordinary days chasing some of the fastest, strongest and most

magnificent creatures in the ocean.

The competition is serious. Teams battle for points under strict rules, with marlin,

sailfish and other billfish at the heart of the championship. But once you leave Marina

Pez Vela in Quepos and point the bow toward the open Pacific, the leaderboard

somehow becomes only part of the story.

Because first, you have to find them.

Hours of scanning an enormous blue horizon. Watching birds. Reading currents.

Searching for the slightest flash beneath the surface. And then suddenly—chaos. A reel

screams. A billfish erupts from the Pacific in an explosion of silver and electric blue, tail-

walking across the water, and an entire boat instantly comes alive.

Then comes the fight.

It is intensely physical and wonderfully personal—angler against an animal possessing

astonishing speed, power and instinct. Line disappears from the reel. The fish dives,

turns and launches skyward again. Your arms ache, your heart pounds, the crew is

shouting—and somewhere in all that adrenaline comes the realization that you are

connected, by one impossibly thin line, to one of the ocean’s most spectacular wild

creatures.

And then comes my favorite moment.

You finally bring that magnificent marlin or sailfish alongside the boat. For just a few

seconds, close enough to touch, you can see its extraordinary colors, its eye, its

enormous bill and the muscular body built to cross oceans. The leader is touched, the

catch is recorded—and then the fish is released.

One sweep of the tail…and it disappears back into the blue.

That moment changes everything.

Because perhaps the greatest reward in billfishing isn't bringing something home. It is

finding something magnificent, testing yourself against it, touching the wild for just a

moment—and then letting it go.

The Costa Offshore World Championship may determine who is among the finest

tournament anglers in the world.

But the Pacific delivers the real prize.

The privilege of meeting one of its giants—and watching it swim away.
